Abstract

Treatment of slurry (mixt. of manure and urine) from intensive (esp. pig) rearing units comprises adjusting the pH of the slurry to 9-12 (pref. >=11) by adding an alkali metal hydroxide or carbonate or an alkaline earth metal hydroxide, or a mixt. of these bases. The base (esp. slaked or unslaked lime) should be added before >=50 (pref. =25) wt. % of the urea in the slurry has been converted to NH3 or NH4 cpds., esp. within 30 mins. of collecting the slurry. The treatment sterilises the slurry and inhibits urease action, thereby suppressing evolution of NH3 and making the prod. suitable for use as a fertiliser or soil improver. The prod. can also be used as a medium for culturing aerobic microorganisms to produce a biomass suitable for use as an animal feed supplement.
