Abstract

Mfr. of a relief-profiled flooring or wall covering comprises mfg. >=1 layer of >=1 foamable reactants in 1st pattern so that a multi-level, foamed, layer is formed after expansion. A 2nd pattern, with a chemical reactant for accelerating or retarding expansion is then printed on >1 of the foamable components; a non-foamable material is applied to form a protective coating. This is followed by heating to expand the foamable material and harden the prod. the 1st and 2nd patterns are designed so that the resulting foamed prod. has a greater number of thicknesses, and hence relief levels, than would be the case in the absence of the chemical reactant in the foamable layer. The relief layer(s) may comprise any gellable and expansible polymer but (co)PVC is pref. The protective coating is pref. a UV-hardenable polyurethane lacquer.
