Abstract

Enclosure of an item between a pair of moulding having a split casing and parting line sealed by overmoulding with a thermoplastic material is described. At least one of the peripheral faces of the casings which butt together is slightly bevelled so the casings first meet around the outside of the joint interface. The casings are then pressed together sufficiently firmly to deform the edges and butt the main edge faces while the external joint sheath is overmoulded. Used for enclosure of electrical or electronic components such as capacitors for suppressing vehicle ignition circuits, using joint seals applied as melts at 200-250 degrees C and 300 bar pressure. The pressure and deformation at the edges of the joint between the two halves of the casing prevents the thermoplastic melt e.g. polypropylene penetrating the casing joint during overmoulding.
