Abstract

The tap for use in railways has a cylindrical closure member rotatable about the cylinder axis to move a passage (58) in the member relative to the flow duct of the tap. A first seal (46) is arranged at the upstream side of the member between the duct and a spherical land (30) on the member. Spaces (28) between the member and the tap housing ensure that fluid pressure on the member is equalised. The spaces are sealed against upstream pressure by the first seal. Second seals (62, 66) arranged at axially opposite ends of the member seal those spaces relative to the exterior of the housing. The member is moved by a hand lever.
