Abstract

Prepn. of 10-hydroxy-ajmalicine (I) comprises chemical oxidn. of ajmalicine (II). Pref. the reaction is effected in 3 stages. The redn. of (II) to (III) is pref. effected with Na cyanoborohydride (CBH) in the presence of cF3COOH. Oxidn. of (III) is pref. effected with K nitrosodisulphonate (NDS), and redn. of (IV) is pref. effected with Na dithionite. The last two can be effected without isolating intermediate (IV). Cpd. (I) has cardiovascular activity. In an example, (II) was first reduced to 2,7-dihydro-ajmalicine, which is then oxidised with K-nitrosodisulphonate and reduced with Na dithionite to give (I).
