Abstract

A bar grating to remove coarse floates and garbage from flowing water and sewage has cleaning elements (I) which can be mechanically moved longitudinally between the bars. (I) are attached to an endless belt on the downstream side of the bar grating. During the upwards movement of (I) on the top strand, a part of them protrudes from the downstream side to over the upstream side. Process prevents any tendency for oversized material to be pressed through the screen from the upstream to the downstream side. The drive elements are not on the upstream side where they can become jammed by coarse floats.
