Abstract
The shock absorber consists of a piston (11) sliding in a cylinder (12) and enclosed in a flexible housing (34), protected by a metal cap (38). The piston (11) is provided with a bell valve (27) which is normally held off its seat by the spring (22) and supported on a perforated platform (32) by the springs (33). Under a steadily applied load fluid flows out of the chamber (28) past the valve (27) and through the holes (29). With a shock load, the sudden rise of pressure in the chamber (28) closes the valve (27) so that the fluid can only flow through the clearance (41) between piston (11) and cylinder (12). This causes a further increase in pressure in the cylinder (12) which resists the shock.
