Abstract

The engine has an independent air compressor which operates isothermally to provide it with combustion air. The compressed air is passed through a heat exchanger through which also flows the engine exhaust gas. A valve diverts a portion of the heated air to a carburettor, a further valve controlling the flow of the air-fuel mixt. and the remaining heated air to a combustion chamber. The combustion chamber is positioned in the engine cylinder head, this being thermally isolated from the cylinder. Ignition in the combustion chamber is automatic in the region of piston TDC, an exhaust valve directing the combustion gases to the heat exchanger during the return stroke of the piston.
