Abstract
An Al-base alloy contains as alloying elements 6.5-7.6% Zn, 1.6-2.2% Mg, 0.8-1.2% Cu, 0.05-0.2% Co, and 0.05-0.3% Zr, with impurities limited to maxima of 0.3% Fe, 0.3% Si, 0.05% Cr and 0.05% Mn. The alloy is intended for large components in highly stressed structures, e.g. forgings, having low residual stress and exhibits improved hardenability, strength, formability and corrosion resistance over present alloys in this class. The best combination of properties is obtd. when Zn:Mg is in the range 2.9-4.7.
