The lighting unit has screens diffusing the light and allowing variations in intensity and/or colour of the light diffused. Light is diffused or reflected by panels of suitable material such as textile or sheet metal, mounted if necessary on a frame of metal or plastic etc. (2). The colour and/or intensity of the light may be varied, a mounting (4-9) supporting the light source (1). A number of panels can be combined to form a cube, cone etc., closed at the top or bottom by a further panel of the same or different material.
