Abstract

An optical device can make measurements which are more accurate and precise than measurements made with mechanical gauges. It has a laser (1), mirrors (2, 3) and semi-transparent strips (4, 5, 6) to obtain narrow beams of lignt. Fifteen light beams are sent onto the bottle (B) and a set of photocells (7, 8, 9). The signal from each cell (7, 8, 9) is modified by a circuit (10) and supplied as pulses to a counter (12). Another counter (13) is set to have desired count. A comparator (14) gives an error signal (E) when the reading of the first counter (12) is different from the second counter (13). During the checking of the bottle (B), a belt (15) is used to move the bottle. The light beams are ten displaced along cross-sections of the bottle.
