Abstract

Rigidly joining together the ends of the pipes which may be axially non-aligned comprises (a) providing first and second coupling elements each of which can be bonded at one end to the end of one of the pipes, the first element having an outwardly enlarged part with axial front and rear sides, at least the former being rounded, while the second element has a housing at its other end for the reception of and co-operation with the rounded front end of the enlarged part of the first element, in such a way that the axes of the coupling element can be placed at an angle corresp. to that of the axes of the pipe ends to be joined, (b) introducing the rounded front end of the enlarged part of the first coupling element into the co-operating housing of the second elements to described above and (c) welding the coupling elements to the corresp. pipe ends so as to produce a rigid joint. Is partic. useful for joining together underwater pipes with out of line axes, and for repairing damaged pipes by cutting out the damaged part and inserting a joint section with coupling elements at each end.
