Abstract

Grafting of a polymer on to a filler is achieved by reacting a crosslinking agent with the mineral particles of the filler while leving one or more functional gps. unreacted and subsequently adding a cpd. which is capable of reaction with these residual gps. and produces after heat treatment at 100-150 degrees C an organic polymer strongly bonded to the filler. By use of such grafted fillers for various industrial purposes, such as the prepn. of rubber, plastics or coating compsns., the props. of the filled prod. are improved. Grafting to fillers has previously involved the use of organo-metallic cpds., isocyanates, siloxanes or silanes and solvents in conjunction with a hydrocarbon monomer. These processes are costly and difficult to carry out, whereas that of the invention can easily be performed in situ.
