Abstract

A turbodrill for mounting on the bottom of a wall drill string has a multistage turbine (a) with stations secured to the drill housing and rotors secured to a common shaft supported in the housing by bearings via which the weight of the drill string can be transmitted to the shaft and a bit, pref. a diamond bit, carried by the shaft, the rotor and station blades each being shaped so that (a) an angle O between tangents to the centre line of the blade profile at the inlet and outlet stages of the blade is in the range 180 degrees (4.5 to 7) a1, a1 being the angle between a line parallel to the turbine axis and the tangent to the centre line of the blade profile at the inlet edge and, (b) an angle alpha 2, between a line parallel to the turbine axis and the tangent to the centre line of the blade profile at the outlet edge is in the range (3.5 to 6) alpha 1. The ratio of maximum thickness of each blade to the chord length thereo fis in the range 0.09-0.19. Pressure differential does not increase by >20% during braking.
