Abstract

Carboxylated hydrocarbon resins for use as binders, esp. in printing inks, are prepd. by (a) preparing a hydrocarbon resin by cationically polymerising an olefinically unsatd. hydrocarbon with >=4C atoms, (b) reacting the resin with a non-aromatic olefinically unsatd. polycarboxylic acid, and (c) reacting the prod. with an unsatd. monomer without carboxyl or anhydride gps. to form a graft copolymer. Resins are obtd. in short reaction times. They have good solubility in org. solvents and give rapidly drying printings inks.
