Abstract
A thyristor based triggering circuit is for a gas discharge lamp. An alternating voltage and current source (20) is applied to the triggering circuit (130) in series with the electrode heating elements (22, 24) and a firing coil (28). All these additional components are mounted compactly above the lamp itself. If the lamp is off, a voltage develops across the triggering circuit which incorporates a smoothed voltage divider (36, 38) of which the common point is attached via a diac (40) to the gate of a thyristor (32) connected across the voltage divider. The effect is that the thyristor fires after a certain voltage has developed, allowing a current through the coil and heating elements to develop. On the following half cycle the thyristor is turned off. This is repeated until the lamp fires, when no voltage can then be developed across the triggering circuit.
