Abstract
Coloured inorganic pigments (pref. contg. oxides of Fe, Cr, Cd or mixed phases) are treated with a melt, soln. or emulsion contg. 0.1-15 wt. % (w.r.t.) the pigment) of polyalkylene glycols of formula HO(CHR'-CHR"-O)xH (mol. wt. 800-2500, pref. 800-12000) and/or their reaction prods. with (a) 0.1-2, pref. 0.8-2 moles of mono- and/or polycarboxylic acids of formula A-R1-B and/or carbonic acid in the form of their esters or halides (pref. each OH gp. of the glycol is reacted with an acid molecule), (b) 0.1-1, pref. 0.5-1 mole of aldehydes of formula C1-R2-D; and/or (c) 0.1-1 pref. 0.5-1 mole of ketones of formula R3-C(O)-R4; and/or (d) 0.1-2 pref. 1.0-1.8 mole of isocyanates of formula E-R5-F; and/or (e) 0.1-2 pref. 0.6-1.6 mole of diketenes; and/or (f) 0.1-2 pref. 0.8-2.0 moles of organhalogenosilanes of formula (R6)2SiX2 (R' is H pref. or CH3; R" is H pref. or CH3; X = 20-1300 pref. 20-700, R1 is 1-20C alkylene, 3-20C alkylidene, phenylene or a direct single bond, these gps. can be opt. substd. with F, Cl, Br aryl, phenoxy or alkoxy gps. A and B independently are H or carboxy gp. with the proviso that both A and B cannot simultaneously be H when R is a direct bond; R2 is 1-20C alkylene, phenylene, naphthylene or a direct bond, these gps can be substd. with F, Cl, Br, aryl, Phenoxy or alkoxy gps. C1 and D independently are H or an aldehyde gp. with the proviso that both cannot simultaneously denote H when R is a direct bond; R3 and R4 independently denote alkyl or phenyl or form together a 4-6C cyclic alkylene gp. these gps. can be substd. with F, Cl, Bry aryl, phenoxy or alkoxy gps. R5 is 3-10C alkylene, phenylene or 4,4'-diphenylenemethane, these gps. can be substd. with F, Cl, Br, aryl, phenoxy or alkoxy gps. E and F independently are H or isocyanate gps. R6 is CH3 or C2H5; and X is Cl, Br or I. Coloured pigments treated by this metod can be used in paints or lacquers. They have reduced flocculation tendency in binders such as alkyd resins. They have high light fastness.
