Abstract
In the prodn. of non-woven fibrous matting by extrusion and entanglement of an array of extruded thermoplastic filaments, a non-ionic surfactant is injected into the molten matl. passing through the extrusion barrel. General, but esp. suitable for mfr. of accumulator separator screens weighing 10-500 g/m2 with a max. pore size of =40 mu and a porosity of >=40%. Suitable for screens made of 2-8C polyolefins, polystyrene or polyamide matls., esp. polypropylene matting made from threads of 0.05-50 mu dia. Addn. of the surfactant during instead of prior to the extrusion process apparently allows the extrusion temp. to be reduced and improves the wettability of the prod. matting by aq. media such as battery electrolytes.
