Abstract

The aquarium consists of a sealed tank (1) whose walls (3) are converted with a layer of waterproof cement. At a certain distance from the bottom (1a) is a perforated false bottom (4) forming a compartment (6) on supports (5). A duct (7) rises to the top of the tank from the compartment. The lower part of the duct (7a) includes a venturi (8) from which a tube (9) leads outside the tank. A bed consists of a sandwich of two coarse outer layers (10, 12) of gravel enclosing a layer of very fine gravel or sand (11) providing a suitable environment for the bacteria which are to break down faecal matter originating from the occupants of the tank, as in a septic tank. The purified water in compartment (6) is re-circulated through duct (7) by blowing air under pressure through venturi (8) from tube (9), thus forming an aspirator.
