Abstract

A cyclone for sepg. two phases of different densities which has a cylindrical body with a tangential inlet at one end and an axial outlet at the other, is fitted with a stack of deflectors, in the shape of a truncated cone, between the inlet and the outlet. These deflectors slope from the central zone to the periphery and they direct the heavy phase so that it cannot return by turbulence into the gas steam. Alternatively, the deflecting system can be continuous in the form of a helix, it may be fixed to the body of the cyclone or it may be mounted so as to rotate, and several cyclones may be mounted on a rotor with their inlets and outlets connected. The deflectors give a practically perfect sepn. because the turbulence which is engendered at the surfaces of existing types of cyclone is avoided, and none of the heavy phase re-enters the stream to be mixed with the light phase.
