Abstract
The combustion chamber of a propulsion system, e.g. rocket, contains one or more elements of the propellant which is coated, at least partially, by a compressible cellular foam which is compatible with and sticks to the surface of the propellant. This foam which fills the space between the propellant elements and the inner wall of the combustion chamber is pref. a rigid polyurethane foam of density >2. In rockets where the propellant is in the form of several elements fixed in a bed-plate the foam filling supports the elements over a 1/4 to 2/3 of their lengths. The filling is installed by injecting a mixture of the liquids which react and polymerise at a temp. less than that at which the propellant begins to deteriorate, at two points equidistant from the axis of the combustion chamber, so that the foam forms 'in situ'. Used in combustion chambers of propellant systems, e.g. rockets, and protects the propellant charge against damage during storage, transportation and initial shock when the rocket is ignited. It is installed at temps. which cause no deterioration of the charge.
