Abstract

Large loads which are unsuitable for road or rail transport, are moved by a lifting frame carrying the load, and supported in the air by rotors driven from its own engines, which can be towed by a conventional helicopter. Two gantries (11, 12) straddle a rigid load (13), with one gantry (11) connected to the rear of a conventional helicopter by a towing cable (15), attached to a pivoting linkage (16). An electric cable (17) connects the gantry to the helicopter cabin, from which are controlled the engines (18) driving the lifting rotors (19) and engine (20) which drives a small vertical rotor (21) for steering. The gantries straddle the load, and can be adjusted to accommodate different load widths. They are connected longitudinally by rods (28), of which the length can be varied in terms of the load length.
