Abstract
Contraction of a non-woven mat wet spun from a mixt. of paper and synthetic fibres of which at least one constituent is potentially self-crimping under suitable chemical thermal or mechanical treatments, where the damp mat is mechanically corrugated prior to being subjected to the selective fibre crimping process. The process is used esp. for mfr. of fabrics contg. 5-45% of self crimping fibres and to be subsequently consolidated by an ancillary binder matl. and for composite fabrics incorporating polyester fibres self crimping at 50-150, pref. 85-115 degrees C. The mechanical pretreatment of the mat while still wet generates sufficient fibre cohesion for the wet spun mat to sustain the stresses induced by the subsequent local fibre crimping treatment without pulling the mat apart, improving the physical properties of the end product.
