Abstract

An immuno-stimulating glycopeptide, obtd. from the cell wall of an immunity stimulating bacterium of the Actinomycetaceae or Mycobacteriaceae genus (Prevot's classification), is purified by removing nucleic acids and Cytoplasma proteins, pref. by treating the whole bacterial cells by 2-phase extraction using aq. and aryl alcohol contg. phases. A novel immuno-stimulating glycopeptide (I), obtd. from cell walls of a suitable immuno-stimulating Actinomycetaceae or Mycobacteriacease bacterium, is insol. in water, physiolocial saline, MeOH, EtOH, PhOH, CHCL3, dioxan, pyridine, DMF, diethylene glycol and hexane; is free of nuclei acids; has IR absorptions at 1550 and 1660 cm -1 (due to peptide) and at 950-1100 cm -1 (max. 1050-1070 cm -1) (due to carbohydrate); has little or no lipid absorption at 2850-2950 cm -1; and on i.v. admnistration increases the wt. of the liver and spleen of mice, and increases the life expectancy of mice infected with tumours. (I) increases the resistance of animals and birds to tumours and various disease stimulants, by inhibiting growth and/or preventing the start of growth. (I) may be used therapeutically or prophylactically against tumours such as leukaemia, Hodgknson's disease, carcinoma of the lungs, bladder or breast, melanoma and Burkitt's lymphoma, against bacterial diseases due to Bordetella pertussis or Brucella abortus, or against parasitic protozoal diseases e.g. malaria.
