Abstract

A method of making a contact lens consists of applying a standardised lens onto a mould surface corresp. to the eye and deforming the lens to fit the surface, so that it exactly fits the eye. Pref., the lens is applied lightly by pressure onto the surface. The process is considerably simpler and more economical than conventional processes. The mould representing the form of the eye is made up from a no. of concentric tubes which are axially adjustable relative to one another and are spanned by a diaphragm to form the actual mould surface. The lens is then pressed onto this surface. Pref., the radii of curvature of the successive tubes range from a minimum to a maximum, to suit the region of the eye with which the element is associated. A thermostatic cap may be fitted around the appts. and close to the diaphragm to keep the lens at the correct temp. The diaphragm is pref. of an elastomer or similar flexible matl., reinforced with fabric and/or metallised.
