Butene diol diacetates, esp. 2-butene-1,4-diol-1,4 (I) and t-butene-3,4-diol (II) diacetates are prepd. by reacting butadiene with O2 and HOAc in liquid or gaseous phase in the presence of a solid catalyst contg. Pt and at least one of As, P, Sb, Se or Te. The diacetates are inters. for butene diol and butanediol and 3,4-butene diol diacetate is an inter. for vitamins and other biologically active cpds.
