Abstract
A vacuum chamber (1) is attached to the shaft (4) of a pneumatic ram (5). One side of the piston (16) is permanently open to the atmosphere (7). The other side (8) is attached to a source of pressure (P) or to atmosphere, the change being affected by a valve (10), electrically operated (12), with a return spring (13). The air line (9) includes a non-return valve (17) bypassed by a flow control valve (19) by which the rate of descent of the load is controlled. A pressure sensing system (20, S) reacts to the reduction of pressure beneath the piston (16) when the load touches the surface beneath, and releases the vacuum, depositing the sheet in position.
