Abstract

Cellulose contg. forage, hay, straw, is upgraded in nutritional value by digestion with 30% aq. phosphoric acid, yielding novel prod. enriched in reducing sugars. Process is relatively simple, prods. can be used alone or in mixt. with other feeds. Phosphoric acid may contain HCl or H2SO4 and pref. contains 50% P2O5. Cellulose material is kneaded with acid for at least 1 hr. at 100 degrees C, temp. is raised to 120-160 degrees C in 15-30 mins, rapidly cooled then dried at 100 degrees C.
