Abstract

Solventless road-marking paint for application from the melt consists of 60-90 (wt)% pigment(s) and/or inorg. filler(s) and 10-40, pref. 15-25% binder comprising a copolymer of 30-99, pref. 35-70% 1-8 C-alkyl (meth)acrylate, 1-15, pref. 3-10 olefinic comonomer(s) with OH or COOH gp(s)., and 0-55, pref. 15-50% other olefinic comonomer(s) and having a melt viscosity of 0.5-10 Pas at 180 degrees C and a softening point of 50-100, pref. 55-90 degrees C. This paint has good wear resistance, improved adhesion to concrete (even when wet) and shows no discoloration or odour formation during processing. The markings are very tough and do not chip. A suitable binder is a copolymer of 40-60% butyl acrylate, 2-10% acrylic acid and 30-55% styrene. The melt viscosity at 180 degrees C is 0.6-1.0 Pas for application by spraying and 3-8 Pas for application with an extrusion shoe. The thickness of the markings generally is 0.5-3 mm, according to the type of application.
