Abstract

Distillery marcs are treated to recover anthocyanin simultaneously with recovery of the alcohol, using a diffusion-extn. appts. which consists of a battery of tanks in series. The distillery marcs, free from stalks, enter at one end and the extn. solvent, i.e. water enters from the opposite and to circulate in counter-current. A known quantity of SO2 is added and sufficient hydrochloric or sulphuric acid is also added to maintain pH4. The extn. medium is heated to 65 degrees C through a branch circuit contg. a heat exchanger and a heat source. The outlet is connected to a concn. section where the alcohol-water solvent is sepd. and the conc. extract is evacuated for purificn. and the prodn. of a colourant for foodstuffs. The solvent passes to the alcohol recovery section with a distn. column, any SO2 being trapped for recycling. The anthocyanins produced are not degraded or polymerised. The plant can easily be accommodated in existing distilleries. Pollution is also reduced. The anthocyanins are used as a colouring material.
