Abstract

The speed control system uses variable coupling between the primary and secondary windings of a transformer (12). These two windings are formed around a hollow core so that the magnetic core (13) may be inserted or removed to alter the coupling. The transformer output is rectified and, via a transistor Darlington Pair, controls the supply to a motor. When used in spooling textile threads, the thread passes over a pulley system with the magnetic core hanging from the thread. Variations in tension cause the core to move in and out of the transformer, thus controlling the motor speed. In this manner tension variations are avoided. It may also be adapted, by sensing tool movement, to control lathe speeds.
