Abstract

Syringes, pref. filled with medicinal compsns. are sterilised by an appts. which consists of a plate of stainless steel, folded in the form of a 'U' with a base and two wings, The upper wing forms a continuous ledge while the lower wing supports a number of short, rigid rods with bevelled tops, which penetrate into the body of the syringe and come into contact with the external faces of the pistons. The other ends of the syringes are plugged by the stoppers which firmly hold them between the two wings. The charged device is introduced into an autoclave; air is evacuated and steam admitted until a temp. of 120 degrees C. and an absolute press. of 2 kg are attained. After one hr., the autoclave is cooled to the ordinary temp. and press. A high standard of sterilisation is obtd. without conducting the cycle with a high degree of precision, esp. regarding cooling. An over-press. can be secured in the syringe without any risk of expelling the stoppers or the pistons.
