Abstract

Polycrystalline diamond prodn. by applying high pressure to diamond powder at high temps. is improved in that the temp. is 2700-3700 degrees C (pref. 3100-3700 degrees C) and the pressure is equal to that at which graphite is converted into diamond, i.e. 120,000-170,000 atm. Alkaline earth cpds. can be added. Diamond grains of different size are mixed together. The application of higher press. and temp. compared with the known methods of producing polycrystalline diamonds improves the mechanical strength of the products, which are suitable for use in drilling tools. The wearing resistance is increased by the alkaline earth additions and by the use of diamond grains having different size. The pref. additives are fluorspar, limestone, chalk and talc; they are pref. applied in layers below and above the diamond powder layer. Pref. two diamond powder fractions are used having the size of 0.1-2.0 mu and 5-60 mu respectively; these fractions are used in a weight ratio of 20-80:80-20, pref. 50:50.
