Abstract
An optically contrasting liq. suspension is produced by the introduction of discrete mass of water-soluble resin gel a second mass of a similar gel hving a different colour or other optical property so that an optical boundary is produced at the interface between the two gels. The gels both have high fluidity limits" i.e they must be subjected to a certain minimum shear stress before any flow takes place, and therefore retain their original shapes indefinitely under normal conditions. Pigments in the form of insoluble particles having a dia. between molecular size and 0.63 mm can be used to create the contrast. The suspensions are used in cosmetic preparations and advertising displays. Typical gels are produced by dissolving carboxyvinyl polymers in water and adding pigments, air bubbles, ball bearings (which will not sink) etc.
