Abstract

The crank case is fully sealed to atmosphere, so that it can hold a vacuum. The connection between crank case and suction duct is unobstructed so that the pressure in the crank case remains substantially equal to that in the suction duct. The piston ring arrangement is such that leakage from the combustion chamber into the crank case is limited to an amount which is less than the flow capacity of the connection. The connection may contain a non-return valve to prevent flow from the suction duct into the crank case. The inlet valve cover may also be sealed to atmosphere and the connection may be arranged via the inlet valve housing to the inlet duct.
