Abstract

Cellulose-based cationic exchange material with a high exchange capacity is prepd. by (a) polymerising acrylonitrile, acrylamide, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, methyl acrylate or methyl methacrylate onto cellulose, with free radical-initiated catalysis, (b) contacting the pdt. from (a) with a soln. of 2.5-10M of an alkali metal for 10-30 mins. at 100-130 degrees C, and (c) immediately stopping the caustic treatment of stage (b). Produce does not swell or gelatinise excessively during contact with water, thus retaining its free flowing characteristics. It exhibits rapid exchange action. Specif., the cellulose is wood pulp, cotton, rayon, ramie or hemp. The amount of grafted polymer is 10-70 wt.%, based on wt. of ungrafted cellulose.
