Abstract
A process for squeezing or compacting fluid sludges contg. fine material 0.02 mm is descuted in the parent patent, the sludge, from a preliminary prim. and sec. flocculation treatment, being agitated in its original suspending liq. so that the floccules increase in vol. and density, the interstitial liq. being removed upwards and the compacted mass of sludge leaving the outlet at the bottom of the appts. The outlet is now controlled by an extn. pump whose speed is adjusted by level detectors. The sludge and a flocculant, generally a synthetic polymer, enter the tanic via a lateral inlet, the floccules are re-formed and descend a vertical tube to a distributing deflector. The larger floccules pass to the bottom of the tank and are pushed downwards by perforated, rotating blades, while the clear liq. rises to the overflow to be evacuated by a pipe. A conical endless screw driven by a motor on the same shaft as the blades, compacts the sludge into a mass which is evacuated by pump from the outlet on to a conveyor. The appts. can deal with very variable sludges and the pump can be stopped to block the outlet if the mixt. becomes too dil.
