Abstract

Articulate substrates have a coating comprising (A) polyolefin (esp. polyethylene such as polyethylene microcrystalline wax) and (B) oil and/or wax. (A) is present at 5 (pref. 0.125) wt.% of the substrate. The coating is applied using (B) (i.e. oil or molten wax) as main vehicle for (A) at a temp. below the cloud point of the (A)-(B) mixt. (eg. 70 degrees C). Esp. for coating granular fertilisers (partic. hygroscopic fertilisers contg. NH4NO3 and/or urea) to prevent powdering and agglomeration on storage. Coatings can be applied at relatively low temps. c.f. prior art coatings in which the polymer must be melted and water from aq. coating compsns. must be eliminated. Less thermally stable substrates can be coated. Discontinuous coatings can be formed.
