Abstract
The safety system of an artillery shell fuse uses shear pins and a shear flange which are designed to be sheared by the acceleration forces of firing, together with a time device comprising a large number of small shots which move under centrifugal forces of rotation of the shell during flight to release the firing mechanism. Used with artillery shells fired from rifled artillery. In addition to the normal inertia-type safety devices, operated by the firing of the shell, the fuse has a time delay device to prevent premature detonation.
