Abstract

The impact strength and abrasion resistance of graphite articles are improved by heating these at >200 degrees C, pref. 200-300 degrees C, esp. 225-270 degrees C and then coating, pref. by electrostatic spraying, with a polyvinylidene fluoride powder to a thickness of 0.1-1 mm. The process is more effective than when impregnating the graphite article with the polymer soln. and then removing solvent. The coated prods. are also non wettable. Process may be used for prodn. of electrodes, heat exchangers, pump components and particularly for the prodn. of Raschig ringo for which special precautions need not be taken when removing them from columns.
