Abstract
A fatigue tester that can simultaneously apply a constant and a varying bending moment together with a constant and a varying torsion to the same region of a cylindrical test specimen (3) has two orthogonal arms each of which is vibrated at a point (6, 7) in a vertical direction by electromagnetic vibrators. The vibrations are at the same frequency but the phase between depends on the angle between the arms being 90 deg. for the present vase. Damping masses (11) and oil filled cylinders (12) at the end of each arm allow a variation of the system resonance frequency. A third orthogonal arm (9) can supply a fixed torsion. Other preset forces are supplied via webs (15) linked to a moving chassis (14). The holder of the fixed part of the specimen oscillates a little about a neck (23) in its body.
