Abstract

Dimensional stabilisation of wood and wood deriv. is effected by (a) impregnating the wood or derivative with (I) a chemically reactive stabiliser which swells the wood to at least the same vol. as obtd. when the wood is impregnated with water, and (b) treating the wood with (II) a reagent for I in the vapour state which diffuses into the wood and forms an insol. reaction pdt. inside the wood having a specific vol. at least 95% of that of I. Efficient, economical dimensional stabilisation. The treated wood remains dry even at high humidities, and has an increased hardness and density.
