Abstract

Solid polyurethanes for car bodywork construction and having high deformation temps., good impact- and bending-strength, are prepd. by reacting a lactone, pref. epsilon-caprolactone, with a polyfunctional cpd. (I) having >=3 active H atoms in molecule and acting as initiator, and reacting the liquid low mol. wt. adduct obtd. with a polyisocyanate. A blowing agent is added for solid polyurethane foam prepn. A lactone-epoxide mixt. contg. 5-60 (10-40) wt. % epoxide, esp. 1,2-epoxyethane or 1,2-epoxypropane, may be used in adduct prepn. Polyfunctional cpds. with 2 active H atoms, e.g. diols, may be used in addn to (I). Without epoxides, catalysts may be org. Sn or org. Ti cpds. or strong acids, esp. dibutyl Sn dilaurate or tetrabutyl titanate. In presence of epoxides catalysts may be Lewis acids, esp. BF3.
