Abstract

The hydrating agent is pref. a hydrophilic polymer, esp a high mol. wt polymer e.g. cmc, gum arabic, gelatin, sol. starch or an ethylene-maleic anhydride copolymer. The co-gel pref. contains 1-80 wt.% of the hydrating agent. The Al salt may be (in)org. e.g. AlCl3, NaAlO2, Al2(SO4)3, Al(NO3)3, Al lactate or Al tartrate. The co-gels are prepd by neutralising the Al salt, pref. at pH 3.5-8.0 (esp. 4.0-7.0) to give a hydrogel which is co-gelled with the hydrating agent. Alternatively the hydrating agent may be added before neutralisation.
