Abstract

Hypodermic syringe of cylindrical section, comprises (a) a plastic stopper provided in the cylindrical section with a plastic body and equipment extending in sealing assembly against the cylindrical section; (b) the plastic body has an axially extending recess with an open end, over which extends a plastic membrane which can be pierced and is spaced from the open end, thereby closing the recess; (c) a hub is provided on which a hypodermic needle is fixed, with one end extending from the hub and fitted in the recess and piercing the membrane; (d) the stopper is injection moulded from an inert, flexible, thermoplastic resin and does not have the self-sealing props. of rubber; (e) the membrane is very thin, with a thickness of only a few hundredths or tenths of a mm. and tends to tear and not to seal round the needle when it is pierced thereby in order to make a connection between the needle and the contents of the cylindrical section; (f) equipment is provided between the oen end and the membrane which acts as a seal between the bore and the outer surface of this needle.
