Abstract
Styrene prepn. by passing ethylbenzene-steam over a dehydrogenation catalyst and an oxidn. catalyst, with supply of O2 into reaction medium, is effected by placing the oxidn. catalyst in a layer downstream after layer of dehydrogenation catalyst; joining a 2nd dehydrogenation catalyst layer to oxidn. catalyst layer and introducing O2 into oxidn. catalyst layer only. Pref. thickness of oxidn. catalyst layer and supply of O2 or O2-contg. gas are adjusted so that most, esp. all, O2 is consumed in oxidn. layer. Oxidn. catalyst layer thicknesses are pref. 0.4-0.8 (0.5-0.7) x thickness of first dehydrogenation layer and the thickness of each dehydrogenation catalyst layer is 1.3-1.6 (1.5) x thickness of preceding dehydrogenation catalyst layer.
