Abstract
A thermoplastic material is extruded as sheet via a calender nip and then guide rolls partly round a rotating drum before being redirected to a regranulation device discharging back to the hopper of the extruder. The drum carries female moulds aligned with external moulding heads which follow part of the motion of the rotating drum surface. Each head incorporates a forming plug which can reciprocate radially w.r.t. the drum axis. The plug ram picks up an annular clamp to allow the final stages of deformation to be achieved by pneumatic pressure. The mouldings are severed from the matrix sheet and ejected after the latter has left the drum surface. Pref. moulds are mounted >=2 abreast. An ancillary plunger in the base of each mould may assist in moulding ejection and opt. to form a recessed base in the moulding. Split moulds with pivotted elements may be used for forming narrow mouth containers. The motions of the drum and the forming plungers etc. are pref. powered and synchronised by hydraulic circuitry. Use of the residual melt heat input for the calendering and forming operations is more efficient than chilling, stocking and reheating the blank sheet, and, coupled with closed loop use of the matrix material, minimises degradation and wastage of materials.
