Abstract

The acids are prepd. by oxidn. with O2 of aromatic cpds contg. >=2 aliphatic lateral chains (p-xylene) in liq. phase in presence of catalyst (Co, Mn cpds. etc) and inert solvent (1-8C monocarboxylic acid) by passing the exit gases from the oxidn. zone where conversion is >=90% to a distillation zone before condensation occurs and recycling part of the liquid obtd. (contg. is not >10 wt.% water) to the oxidn. zone. Amt. of solvent is 0.1-30 times the wt. of feed. Oxidn. temp. is 100-220 degrees C at 3-25 atm. in 0.5-10 hr. The method dissipates heat released in oxidn. and separates water produced from the solvent.
