Metal esp. iron surfaces e.g. of cooling towers and heat exchangers are protected against corrosion by contacting with an aqs soln. of a polyelectrolytic org. polymer which is prepd. from cpds. of formula C=C-R (where R is CN, C2H5N, CONH2 or COOH), and has an av. mol. wt of 25,000-35,000,000 the concn. of the polymer being 0.01-1,000 esp. 0.1-100 ppm pts. water.
