Abstract
Catalyst for electrophilic processes esp. alkylation and cationic polymsn. e.g. of butylene, consists of an organo-aluminium cpd of formula RnAlX3-nZH2 (where R is alkyl; X is halogen; Z is O or S; and n is 1 or 2) dissolved in an alkane, chloroalkane, cycloalkane or aromatic hydrocarbon. Easily soluble in hydrocarbons. Stable during storage. High activity. Gives uniform high mol. wt. polymers. The catalyst is prepd. by reacting an organo-aluminium cpd. of formula RnZlX3-n with water or H2S in a hydrocarbon solvent at -100 degrees C to +70 degrees C, pref. -20 degrees C to +30 degrees C.
